Off-season storage is the most dangerous time for your cashmere collection. Moths don't actually eat the fabric for fun—their larvae feed on the organic proteins, sweat, and oils left behind on unwashed clothes. One incorrect step can lead to irreversible holes in your favorite pieces.
Follow this premium preservation routine before packing your knits away:
- The Deep Clean: Never store cashmere that has been worn, even once. Hand wash your garments thoroughly to remove invisible skin cells, perfume, and body oils. Allow them to air-dry completely on a flat surface.
- The Professional Fold: Never hang cashmere. Gravity will stretch out the shoulders and distort the entire silhouette. Fold them neatly using tissue paper between the layers to prevent friction and static build-up.
- Breathable Protection: Avoid plastic storage bins or bags. Plastic traps moisture, which can lead to mildew and yellowing. Instead, use breathable cotton garment bags or zippered canvas storage cubes.
Natural Deterrents: Skip the toxic, foul-smelling chemical mothballs. Use natural cedar blocks, chips, or lavender sachets. Remember to gently sand your cedar blocks every few months to reactivate their protective, insect-repelling aromatic oils.
